How to export your Instagram followers
Instagram's official export works, but it arrives days later as a giant archive of everything. Here's how to get a clean spreadsheet of your followers now.
Instagram's own export, and where it falls short
Instagram does let you download your data, under Settings › Accounts Centre › Your information and permissions › Download your information. It is free and it is the official route, so try it first.
Two things make it awkward in practice. It can take hours or days to arrive, and it lands as a large archive of JSON or HTML covering your whole account — posts, messages, likes, everything — which you then have to dig through to find the follower list. If you want a spreadsheet of who follows you, right now, that is a lot of ceremony.
Exporting to CSV from your desktop
- Install InstaDesk and open instagram.com.
- Open the InstaDesk menu and choose Export followers. Opening the panel costs nothing.
- Pick followers, following, or both.
- Click export. You get a CSV in your Downloads folder, ready for Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets or anything else.
The file is built on your computer from what your own session can see. It is not uploaded anywhere, and there is no copy of your follower list on a server belonging to us.
What people actually use the file for
Finding who does not follow back. Export both lists, and anyone in following but not in followers is a non-mutual. A spreadsheet does this in one formula.
Keeping a record before a change. Rebranding an account, going private, or merging two accounts all shuffle your audience. A snapshot beforehand means you can tell afterwards what actually moved.
Client reporting. If you run accounts for other people, a dated CSV is the difference between a claim and evidence.
Spotting bots before a purge. A follower list sorted by account age or username pattern makes the obvious fakes obvious.
What you should not do with it
A follower export is a list of real people. Loading it into a mailing list, a CRM, or an automated DM tool is not a growth tactic, it is spam, and depending on where you and they live it may also break data-protection law. It is also how accounts get reported.
Use it as a record of your own account. That is what it is good for.
Common questions
Does it export followers of any account, or only mine?
Only what your own logged-in session can already see. It is a tool for your own account, not a scraper for other people's.
What columns are in the CSV?
Username and profile URL, so the file opens cleanly anywhere and every row is clickable.
Is there a size limit?
Large accounts take longer because the list is paged through at a deliberately unhurried rate — hammering Instagram's endpoints is how tools get accounts restricted. Leave the tab open and let it finish.
Does Instagram know I exported?
There is no export event to report. The extension reads your follower list the same way the page itself does when you scroll it.
